King Edward VII Scholarships.

In a despatch of which you have courteously allow-

-ed me the perusal (No. 207: dated 15th. September, 1909: in C.S.0. 2 in 8156/1908), the Secretary of State informed Sir Frederick Lugard *that His Majesty's Government had decided that, on the establishment of the University, they would provide an annual sum of £300 for scholer. -ships". The Despatch proceeds: "His Majesty's Government leave it to you to determine the number and value of the scholarships to be given and to decide to what faculties they are to be attached".

2.

I am directed by the Council to request that you will be good enough to inform His Lajesty's Government that the University is now established and proposes to open the first session with two faculties Ledicine and Mngineering - commencing tuition upon the 14th. September next in the Medical Faculty and upon the 15th. October next in the Engineering Faculty; and that you will request His Majesty's Government to recognise a financial year dating from the 1st. September for the purpose of the King Edward VII Scholarships and to place the annual contribution (£500) to the credit of the University with the Colonial Treasurer at the commencement of each such financial

year.

3.

The Council of the University desire that the annual value of each scholarship should be £40 (the anual tuition fee of the University being $300.00) and that each scholarship should be tenable for the whole length of the curriculum of the Faculty in which it is granted. The Council desires, also, to award two scholarships annually the first awards being made one in the Medical Faculty and one in the Engineering Faculty. Other Faculties will share in the awards as they are established. It is proposed that the scholarships should be awarded upon a special competitive examination.

4.

I am to express the hope that you will be able to obtain sanction of His Majesty's Government to these proposals and that
